I Want My Own Room: Behind The Scenes

Working on I Want My Own Room as the designer is the most fun job in the world! From wild ideas to hilarious outtakes, the team are a great bunch and we have had an amazing time making the series. Sure, it's super hard work, we film almost six days to make the 30 minute show you see on BBC2, but I can honestly say I'd do it every day if I could!

The first episode aired last Saturday 8th October on BBC2 at 10:30am (catch it here on iPlayer) and it was terrifying watching myself on screen - from the little I saw behind a pillow! The room was an outdoor office space which was half office and half 'chill-out' space where we made a revolving door between them for a 'secret' area. The build of the structure took a lot longer than we anticipated as it had to be built plank by plank, so the first few days were so long with one very tired joiner.

Branding and logo design was the making element on the show with a 'how to' guide to designing your own logo - keep your eyes peeled for an online video showing kids how to design their own.

The chill-out space was created using stripes of sticky vinyl which were peeled off and stuck onto the wall, radiating out from the central union jack canvas, this is a quick and easy way to put some colour into a kids space, make sure you buy the right kind on vinyl some is easily removable so you can cahnge your mind and some is tougher but will take the paint off if you make a mistake!

The great thing about I Want My Own Room is the encouragement to creating things yourself, it's not about buying more things for your kids room, it's taking what you have and up-cycling, painting and making to refresh the space. The emphasis is totally on doing things together, a Sunday afternoon painting an old shelf or making a collage is worth a million times a new chair from Ikea.
